My name is Miranda Flores Farley. I’d like to welcome you to my blog and hope if you don’t already love Hamilton you will at least grow to appreciate it from an educator’s standpoint by the end of the semester.
A little background on me; I am a Theater Education major here at UWM. I am most passionate about acting and theatre history, so you could say Hamilton really spoke to my inner history nerd. I have not only acted and performed, but I also sung in choir, which is where my adoration for musical theatre stemmed from.
One of the things I love most about Hamilton was the way it combined U.S. History with so many different genres of music. While the main musical element of the show is hip hop, it also ties together elements of jazz, rock, and classical music genres. Being a lover of many different kinds of music, I consider this my favorite part. (Lin was also a big Bowie fan. Check out the Moana soundtrack — which he wrote most of — and you might here the influence!)
I will certainly not be the first teacher to use Hamilton as a resource for my teachings, here’s what another eighth grade teacher has to say about this unique production.

Hello! I believe we had Educational Psychology with Jacqueline Nguyen last semester, is that right? Cool that you are into theater! I wrote a musical for the Alchemist Theatre that debuted last summer, my second after writing something for the Underground Collaborative.
Oddly, I haven’t really been exposed to Hamilton yet in a significant way, although my wife and I tried to get rush tickets last time we were in New York. In any case, looking forward to your observations on education and the theater; you should keep our group updated on UWM productions of interest!

I saw the title of this post and didn’t dare believe it was a Hamilton reference. BUT IT WAS AND I’M ON BOARD! Reading this got me so excited to read more from you, I absolutely love Hamilton and love reading about it from the perspective of someone with more background in theater than I have.
